 SUTHERLAND SHIRE COUNCIL SURF AWARENESS PROGRAMS

For more than 20 years, Sutherland Shire Council’s Lifeguards have been providing school students from the Sutherland Shire and south-western Sydney with the knowledge and skills to enjoy time spent at the beach through its Surf Education Program. The program was introduced in the early 1980s after Lifeguards saw a lack of surf awareness in primary school students who were constantly being rescued. Lifeguards visited schools to give students a basic understanding of the beach environment. Today, the programs offered by Sutherland Shire Council have expanded to include a range of surf safety and survival courses:
